Course design using scaffolding
The goals of scaffolding are to increase student proficiency and develop their skills as self-regulated learners. This is achieved by providing an appropriate amount of instructional support based on student needs and context complexity. As students grow as learners, scaffolding can be changed, reduced or removed over time.
Forms of scaffolding include:
- Mini-lessons
- Journal entries
- Vocabulary lesson – glossary
- Quick class discussion
- Videos/Presentations
- Activities, knowledge checks, assessments
Strategies of scaffolding could be:
- ‘Chunk’ complex skills or knowledge transfer into small ‘digestible pieces’ – videos 3-6 mins
- Divide instruction into mini-lessons with periodic checkpoints – knowledge checks/activities
- logically and meaningfully set up course structure
- Provide additional supports, resources and references (these are often in buttons or links in my courses)
- Incorporate technology support – logging in, how to pages etc
- Share lesson goals or objectives – what and how are they going to learn?
- Build upon learners prior knowledge and experience
- Share examples and exemplars
- Provide steps, processes or procedures
SCAFFOLDING IN THIS COURSE
- LEARNING objectives & outcomes – what and how they will learn -at the start of the course
- Do they need prior learning/experience? If so what?
- How long will this learning take (approximately)
- Share examples along the way – visuals, videos, templates etc
- Explain what the learning process will be – how much time will be needed, can they save and come back to it, do they need any equipment – devices, software etc.
- Give them links for other support – technology support, loggin in, saving, uploading video proof (assessments)
- CHUNKING – Ensure videos are 3-7 mins only. Break up the learning if it requires longer attention span.
- Discussions – community hub
- Reflection on their learning – survey or journal
